Well it’s been in development for quite a while, but the new look is finally active on the site. The one thing that remains sort of unsettled is the link colour. The grey I’ve got on it now (#666666 if you’re interested) seems to be working, but I may do some more experiments there.
I’ll also be doing some browser compatibility testing later. I got most of that out of the way while the site was still in testing, but there can always be another couple of niggling little bugs somewhere. If you spot one of them feel free to comment here. And if you just want to comment on some part of the new look, also feel free to comment here.

Whew! What a surprise! I just thought I had accidentally accessed your test site
I like the new look, though the link color seems a little too weak for my taste. And – and now please don’t shoot me for my continuous critizism – the background image may be a tiny bit too strong, it distracts slightly from reading. But other than that … cool!

It is a bit of a difference isn’t it. I probably will keep playing around with the link colours, and I may do the same to the background image. Though part of the problem there has been previously covered in The Monitor Rant. Depending on how I configure my monitor I get anything from the effect you’re getting – the background slightly to heavy – to the opposite extreme – the background pattern barely staying visible.
I’ll try to find a golden mean between those extremes, but as covered in the rant linked above, it’s often nearly impossible to get black and white to show up the same across different monitors. Getting this background image to look right everywhere is probably going to be a pretty severe uphill struggle.

Congratulations on your new design

Glad you like the look. I’m still contemplating putting up a legacy version just to shop people the difference. There’s also still a couple of tweaks to be made in the next few weeks, but I find I can look at it for quite a while without feeling any immediate need to start designing a new version.
